What is Laminate Flooring?

A common question that we receive often is, "exactly what is a laminate flooring?" Well to begin with, the laminate concept was first envisioned in 1938 by Dr. Morris M.Blum who was a dentist who adapted the use of using plastic resins to cover teeth. He took this idea and laminated a photograph of his wife. The commercial use of lamination was first utilized in the manufacture of countertops.

Todays laminate floorings are much more complex than photo lamination, but the general premise remains the same. The floors is fabricated out of a series of materials that are bonded together with approximately 5 layers of material.

The uppermost layer if a durable transparent protective layer that resists use. Directly beneath is the decorative layer that can simulate any surface including hardwood, marble, stone, ceramic or any surface imaginable. In the center is a high density synthetic core that provides structural integrity to the floor. A separate resin layer lies underneath that provide protection for water permeation.

The laminate flooring as we know it today, was pioneered by a Swedish company in 1977 called Perstorp. The flooring became known as "Pergo" by professionals in the industry that referenced the manufacturer. It was introduced to Europe in 1984 and subsequently made its debut in U.S. Markets in 1994. Originally, the floor required the use of glues to adhere to the subfloor. Today, laminate flooring are engineered to be assembled through a series of click joints or assembly systems that no longer requite the use of adhesives to affix the laminate to the flooring.

Laminate flooring has been embraced by the consumer for many reasons including:

• Simulated surfaces that are much more affordable than their authentic counterparts
• Resiliance to wear and easy maintenance
• The ability to install the floating floor over a wide range of sub-floors
• Ease of installation by the homeowner in many cases
• Easily removable and replacement
• Cost Effective

Long Island Floors by Starbrite Launches New Website

Overview: History of Modern Flooring

Modern flooring as we know it today had its humble beginnings at the 1933 Chicago Century of Progress Exposition with Vinyl Flooring.  It was not until after WWII that vinyl flooring became popular where it found market success for commercial applications because of its durability and ease of installation. Slowly, vinyl floors began to see adaptation for residential use. Vinyl floors are historically known for resilience and ability to handle heavy volume traffic. Over the following decades, advances in production produced cushioned vinyl floors and no wax flooring.

Lineoluem Floors were introduced just prior to WWII, but are mounting a tremendous comeback. Modern linoleum is a far cry farm your grandmother's kitchen floor and are now available in vibrant and more long lasting colors.

Carpet production in the United States stared around 1791 when William Sprague started the first woven carpet mill in Philidelphia. He imported workers and methods from the British cloth industry.
The hand made carpet he produced were called Axminster and were popular due to their distinctive colors and design. They were succeeded by Ingrain carpets which were a flat, woven reversible rug made with dyed yarn.

Carpet sales and techniques fluctuated until the 1950s when synthetic fibers were introduced. Today, approximately 80% of all carpet produced in the United States are milled by Shaw Industries located in Georgia.

In 1841 the power loom was introduced, which utilized machines to weave carpet. A medical student from Boston named Erastus B Bigelow induced the power loom for ingrain carpets and made improvements that cut down on the cost of production.

Laminate floorings are a recent invention first introduced in 1977 by the Swedish Company Perstorp and sold under the brand name Pergo. Its multi layered synthetic construction is bonded together in a lamination process with a clear protective layer. It is a more cost effective alternative to traditional hardwood flooring because of its easy installation and low maintenance.

Long Island Flooring Company Starbrite Floors has been serving the home flooring needs of residents of Long Island since over 50 years. Little did Charlie Casella realize in 1957 when he started his family owned carpet cleaning business in Richmond Hills, Queens that the business would grow into a full service flooring company.

Looking to maintain an edge in the market, Stanton kicked off 2013 by bringing something more upscale and unique to the carpet world. Enter Atelier, Stanton’s largest patterned line to date that prompted it to revive a brand name that hadn’t been used in about a decade.

“We purchased the Atelier brand in 2000 and stopped using the name,” said Jonathon Cohen, Stanton’s COO. But this new, printed carpet line had what it took to strengthen the brand. “We developed this line and needed a name for it, so we decided to bring it back.”

The collection is a printed type 6 nylon offering treated with a stain safe treatment and has about 150 SKUs.  In addition, it features original designs, including transitional, animal, geometric and some floral patterns. So far, Cohen said, positive response has continued to grow since its unveiling at Surfaces. “We had an amazing response to this line at Surfaces 2012 and the retailers really seemed excited about it.”
